What is meniere disease?

This disease is caused by an excess of fluid in the inner ear. It tends to cause recurrent episodes of dizziness, hearing loss and tinnitus (ringing sounds in the ear).

Symptoms of meniere disease

  • Giddiness that happens together with ringing in the ears or hearing difficulty

  • Dizziness

  • I feel like I'm spinning around / vertigo

  • Hearing difficulty

  • Sensation of imbalance as if floating when at sea

  • Ringing sounds in the ear, i.e. Tinnitus, on one side only

  • Ringing in the ears

  • Nausea or vomiting

Questions your doctor may ask to check for meniere disease

Your doctor may ask these questions to diagnose meniere disease

  • Have you ever felt dizzy with ringing in the ears (tinnitus) or deafness?

  • Are you feeling dizzy right now?

  • Do you feel like your surroundings are spinning around?

  • Do you have hearing problems?

  • Do you feel like you are floating / off-balance like you are at sea?

Treatment for meniere disease

Treatment mainly aims to reduce and prevent vertigo episodes. The specialist may prescribe medications for this, or recommend other procedures in the ear. As hearing loss progresses, some patients may also benefit from using hearing aids.
