Our Origin

Access to the right care at the right time.

Conundrum.

The two years that cost a lifetime

One day, a woman in her mid-40s came to the emergency room where Dr. Abe works and complained, “I have back pain.” She had also been having bloody stools for the past two years. A thorough examination revealed that her colon cancer had progressed to stage 4 — meaning she had only about a 15% chance of being alive in five years. This is despite the fact that her survival rate would have been about 90% if she had been diagnosed at stage 1 or 2, two years before she first noticed the abnormality.

Considering the average life expectancy in Japan, this patient could have lost about 30 years of life to a two-year delay in seeking medical attention. This experience made Dr. Abe realize how important it is to have access to the right care at the right time.

No one in 7.8 billion will not face health problems in their lifetime.

Kubo, a software engineer who later became one of the co-founders of Ubie and Abe’s high school classmate in Osaka, had been involved in the development and research of disease prediction since his university days. Kubo had always wanted to create software that could be used worldwide. Through discussions with Abe, who was beginning his career as a doctor, he saw great potential in medical AI and became even more interested in developing the field.

No one can be left out of medical care — regardless of country, age, gender, or any other factor. Abe, a medical doctor, and Kubo, a software engineer, co-founded the company with the mission of “developing a healthcare guide for everyone.”

Reconnect patients and providers in a world of fragmentation and chaos.

Since 2017, Ubie has continuously improved its disease-prediction AI, drawing on more than 50,000 medical papers, 7 million users a month, and 1,000 healthcare facilities in the field. Thousands of doctors and patients have said that Ubie saved their lives by helping them see the right healthcare provider at the right time.

At Ubie, we believe we can properly reconnect patients and healthcare providers in a world of fragmentation and chaos. As one of Japan’s leading technology companies, we will prove that — together with our partners — we can achieve our vision of “Hello, Healthy World.”
