Any upper respiratory infection, including COVID-19, can cause blood-tinged nasal mucus.
If you have COVID-19, it can be normal to notice a small amount of blood mixed with nasal mucus due to inflamed nasal tissues and fragile blood vessels. However, seeing blood mixed with nasal mucus is not limited to only COVID-19. Other conditions that may cause blood-tinged mucus include other viral infections like the flu or common cold, allergies, dry air, excessive nose blowing, or injury to the nasal passages. Sometimes, even vigorous nose picking can cause this symptom. A small amount of bleeding is not typically cause for concern but if you experience heavy bleeding or bleeding that does not stop, you should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
