Infectious gastroenteritis caused by bacteria and viruses is a likely and common cause of those symptoms.
Infectious gastroenteritis caused by bacteria and viruses often leads to fever and diarrhea. Some bacteria that may cause gastroenteritis include campylobacter, which can be contracted from eating raw or undercooked poultry. Another common bacteria is salmonella which is commonly found in eggs. There are many different types of viruses that can cause viral infectious gastroenteritis. These same viruses can cause cold-like symptoms (runny nose, sore throat, cough) in addition to fever and diarrhea or may only cause fever and diarrhea.
