Jelly-like mucus discharge from your anus can occur when your intestines are irritated or inflamed, sometimes due to an infection or conditions affecting the rectum.
Your digestive system makes mucus as a natural lubricant to protect the inside of your intestines. When parts of your intestines or rectum become irritated—for example, from an infection, severe inflammation seen in conditions such as ulcerative colitis, or if the rectum protrudes outside the body (called rectal prolapse)—your body might produce extra mucus. This mucus can sometimes look jelly-like. It is your body’s way of trying to soothe and protect the inflamed or irritated area. If you see this jelly-like discharge and it lasts for a while, or if you also feel pain or have significant bleeding, it is important to talk with a doctor.
