What Could a Small Bump on the Inside of My Lip Mean?

A small bump on the inside of the lip can be concerning, but understanding its common causes can help put your mind at ease. While most of these bumps are not dangerous, it's important to know what might be causing them and when to seek medical attention. Common causes of a small bump on the inside of the lip include:

• Mucocele (most common)
• Salivary gland stones (sialolithiasis)
• Minor injuries from biting or trauma Mucoceles are small, fluid-filled bumps that happens when saliva leaks out from a small injury in the salivary gland inside your lip. It may look or feel like a soft lump and is most common on the lower lip. In many cases, mucoceles happen after accidentally biting your lip or another minor trauma. Another possibility is a small blockage or stone in a salivary gland, similar to what is sometimes called sialolithiasis. This is when a tiny stone or clog forms in the gland, blocking the flow of saliva, and is often seen on the upper lip. These conditions are typically benign, meaning they are not dangerous; however, if the bump grows, feels painful, or does not go away, it is a good idea to let a doctor or dentist take a look and advise further.
