Sinusitis is considered acute if it lasts up to 4 weeks. It is considered chronic if symptoms persist beyond 12 weeks.
Sinusitis symtoms include nasal congestion or fullness, nasal discharge and facial pressure. Other symptoms include teeth pain, cough, fatigue, sore throat, ear presure or fullness, and fever.
Acute sinusitis is may last up to 4 weeks. The vast majority of acute sinusitis is caused by viral infections that resolve on their own. However, symptoms beyond 10 days or a worsening of symptoms may suggest a bacterial cause that would response to antibiotoics.
Chronic sinusitis persists beyond 12 weeks with a variety of causes such as infection, nasal polyps, allergies and immunodeficiencies.
