What is sigmoid colon cancer?

The sigmoid colon is the final part of the large intestine before reaching the rectum. The exact cause of sigmoid colon cancer is unknown, but it begins when healthy cells in the colon develop changes (mutations) in their DNA. Risk factors include family history, certain hereditary cancer syndromes, diet, smoking, and alcohol use.

Symptoms of sigmoid colon cancer

  • Blood in stool

  • Feeling the need to pass motion even though nothing comes out

  • Abdominal pain

  • Stool has become narrower in caliber, like a pencil

  • Fatigue

  • Stomach feels bloated

  • Lower abdominal pain

Questions your doctor may ask to check for sigmoid colon cancer

Your doctor may ask these questions to diagnose sigmoid colon cancer

  • Have you ever had a positive stool occult blood test?

  • Is there blood in your stool?

  • Do you often have the urge to pass motion but are unable to do so?

  • Do you have abdominal pain (stomach ache)?
