It is not unusual for some people to feel pain in their armpit, even years after a mastectomy. This can happen for various reasons, and each person’s experience may be different.
After a mastectomy, some people experience persistent pain that can include discomfort in the armpit area. Researchers have looked into why this happens and found that the pain can sometimes be linked to changes in the nerves, scar tissue formation, or even swelling related to changes in the lymph system. Studies have shown that even when doctors cannot pinpoint an exact treatment factor causing the pain, many patients continue to feel discomfort long after their surgery. This persistent pain is sometimes called “post-mastectomy pain syndrome.” It is important to remember that while it can be normal to have some discomfort for a long time, any new pain patterns or concerns should be shared with a doctor or a healthcare provider. If you feel your pain is managed poorly, it is also important to see a doctor for help. They can help decide if the pain is a normal part of healing, if it is nerve-related, or if there are other causes that might need treatment or management.
