Chronic Dry Skin, Cracking Hands, Spreading Rash: How to Relieve Symptoms?

Question background

20s, Female

I have had dry skin in my elbow creases on and off for years. My hands are consistently dry, cracked, red, and splotchy with the amount of handwashing I do at work (food service). This condition has been mild and consistent for years until about a month ago when it started spreading up my arms. Redness and splotches used to appear and fade over time, but the current redness, splotches, and bumps have stayed in place for weeks. How can I relieve symptoms on my own?

Dr. Taylor’s Response

I understand you're dealing with persistent skin issues, and I can see why you're concerned about the recent changes. While I can't diagnose your condition, I can offer some general advice for managing dry, irritated skin.

In my experience, many people find relief from dry skin symptoms with these self-care steps:

  • Use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer regularly, especially after washing hands or bathing
  • Avoid hot water when washing; use lukewarm instead
  • Consider wearing cotton gloves at night after applying moisturizer
  • Use a humidifier to add moisture to the air
  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated
  • Try over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream for itching and inflammation

However, given the persistence and spread of your symptoms, I strongly recommend seeing a primary care doctor or dermatologist. They can properly diagnose your condition, which could be eczema, contact dermatitis, or another skin issue, and provide targeted treatment.

Remember, early intervention often leads to better outcomes with skin conditions. Take care, and don't hesitate to seek professional medical advice for your skin concerns.
