Oral Ulcer and Vaginal Spot: Could it be an STD?

Question background

20s, Female

I have a cut-like ulcer on the tip of my tongue, which looks more white and red. I've had this before because it's right where my permanent retainer hits. On an inner fold of my vagina (distinct from my clitoris or labia), I have a very small red, raw spot. It is not blistering, and there is nothing anywhere else. It's painful to the touch and red, but not itchy. Given these symptoms, I am unsure if I might have an STD.

Question background

Dr. Taylor’s Response

I understand you're concerned about the possibility of an STD based on the symptoms you're experiencing. It's natural to feel worried, but try not to jump to conclusions.

In my experience, ulcers or sores in the mouth and genital area can have various causes, including STDs, but also non-sexually transmitted conditions like:

  • Canker sores (for the tongue)
  • Friction or irritation from clothing or hygiene products
  • Yeast infections
  • Bacterial infections
  • Allergic reactions

Given the location and nature of your symptoms, I strongly recommend seeing a healthcare provider, preferably your primary care doctor or a gynecologist, as soon as possible. They can perform a proper examination, run necessary tests, and provide an accurate diagnosis.

In the meantime:

  • Avoid sexual activity until you've been evaluated
  • Keep the areas clean and dry
  • Avoid using harsh soaps or douches
  • Wear loose, breathable cotton underwear

Remember, many genital health issues are easily treatable once properly diagnosed. Don't hesitate to seek medical care — it's the best way to get answers and appropriate treatment if needed.
