New Stomach Cramps, Burping, Nausea, Constipation: When to See a Doctor?

Question background

10s, Female

I am 19 years old. I've started experiencing stomach cramps and burping randomly throughout the day, which I haven’t experienced before. After I eat, I feel nauseous, and although I don’t throw up, the feeling stays for a good 2-3 hours, and the feeling sometimes returns randomly as well. I usually have a bowel movement every morning, but lately I have been struggling to do so, and whenever I do, it’s not a lot. I feel the urge to pass gas, but my stomach feels strange when I try. How long can I wait before seeing a doctor?

Question background

Dr. Taylor’s Response

I understand you're experiencing new and uncomfortable digestive symptoms, which can be concerning. While I can't diagnose your condition, I can provide some general advice.

In my experience, these symptoms could be related to various issues, such as:

  • Constipation
  • Gastritis
  • Food intolerances
  • Stress

In the meantime, you might find some relief by:

  • Eating smaller, more frequent meals
  • Increasing your fiber intake
  • Avoiding spicy, fatty, or acidic foods
  • Staying hydrated with water or clear broths
  • Getting adequate rest

If you experience severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, blood in your stool, or signs of dehydration, seek medical attention immediately.

Remember, your primary care doctor is the best person to evaluate your symptoms, perform a physical exam, and order any necessary tests. They can provide a proper diagnosis and treatment plan tailored to your specific situation.

Take care of yourself, and don't hesitate to seek medical help if your symptoms worsen or you become more concerned.
