Slight Unbalance After Head Fall and Eye Exam: Possible Causes?

Question background

70s, Female

I had a fall 3 days ago where my forehead hit concrete. I was immediately seen at an Emergency Care Center and have had NO symptoms of a concussion since the fall. Today, I was seen by my Optometrist and had a full eye exam. Now I am slightly unbalanced. What might be causing my current symptoms?

Question background

Dr. Taylor’s Response

I understand your concern about feeling slightly imbalanced after your eye exam, especially given your recent fall. It's good that you sought immediate care and had no initial concussion symptoms. Your proactive approach in following up with an eye exam is commendable.

The imbalance you're experiencing now could be related to a few factors:

  • Delayed concussion symptoms: Sometimes, these can appear days after an injury
  • Vestibular system disruption: The fall might have affected your inner ear balance mechanisms
  • Cervical spine issues: Neck problems from the fall could affect balance
  • Temporary effects from eye dilation: This can sometimes cause brief balance issues

Given the recent head trauma and these new symptoms, I recommend following up with your primary care doctor. They can reassess your condition, perform neurological tests, and determine if further evaluation is needed.

In the meantime:

  • Be cautious to prevent additional falls
  • If you experience worsening symptoms, severe headaches, vision changes, or confusion, seek immediate medical attention

Remember, monitoring symptoms after a head injury is crucial, as some effects can appear later. Your health and safety are the priority here.
