Vaginal Soreness, Brown Crumbly Discharge, Itching, Burning: Possible Causes?

Question background

10s, Female

I have soreness around my vagina, including the labia. There is no foul odor, but a smell of iron that you can only detect less than an inch away. I have brown discharge that is crumbly (it is still wet and spreads apart like glitter when I wipe). My health app says I should be getting my period soon, but I have itching and burning pain. I don’t have any pain when peeing until it touches the skin at the vaginal opening. I try to squeeze my legs and rub my legs back and forth to stop the pain. I change my underwear more often (nothing abnormal gets on my underwear), and I have to wash them frequently to prevent the brown discharge from building up. One minute I feel wet, and at other times I feel dry. I feel a burning pain when I wash my vagina with mild soap. This soap never hurt me before; I've been using it for years with no problem and no formula change. I have never had sexual intercourse or masturbated, or had anything inserted into my vagina other than for cleaning. This happens randomly. What are the possible conditions based on my symptoms?

Dr. Taylor’s Response

I understand you're experiencing discomfort in your vaginal area, including soreness, itching, burning, and unusual discharge. These symptoms can be concerning, especially when they're new or unexplained. Based on your description, some possible conditions to consider include:

  • Yeast infection (vaginal candidiasis)
  • Bacterial vaginosis
  • Vulvovaginitis (inflammation of the vulva and vagina)
  • Hormonal changes related to your menstrual cycle
  • Allergic reaction or sensitivity to products (like soap, detergent, or pads)

In my experience, it's important not to self-diagnose or try to treat these symptoms on your own, especially since you mention you've never had sexual contact. The brown discharge and iron smell could be related to your upcoming period, but the other symptoms warrant a professional evaluation.

I strongly recommend seeing a gynecologist or your primary care provider soon. They can perform a proper examination, possibly take samples for testing, and provide an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.

In the meantime, avoid using soap directly on your vaginal area - plain water is usually sufficient for cleaning. Wear cotton underwear and avoid tight clothing. Don't use any over-the-counter treatments without consulting a doctor first.

Remember, your vaginal health is important. Don't hesitate to seek medical care for these symptoms. Take care, and I hope you find relief soon.
