Irregular periods often happen due to changes in hormones. Issues like thyroid problems, stress, too much exercise, and not eating enough can all contribute to changes in your cycle.
Your period is controlled by many hormones, and when these hormones are not balanced, the timing of your period can change. One common cause is polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) which is a hormonal issue affecting many women of reproductive age. Thyroid disease can also affect your normal hormones which can then affect your cycle. Diet and exercise can also come into play. If you exercise a lot or do not eat enough food, your body might not have the energy it needs to keep a regular cycle. This can lead irregular or absent periods. Stress is another important factor. When you are stressed, your hormones can be affected and your period disrupted. In younger girls, hormone and growth changes can also lead to irregular periods as the body adjusts. Similarly, perimenopause (the period when the ovaries gradually stop producing hormones) is associated with irregular periods. If you have other symptoms or concerns, it is a good idea to talk with a healthcare provider.
