Depersonalization can last for a few minutes or hours, and for some people, it may go on for days, weeks, or even longer if it becomes a disorder.
People experience depersonalization in different ways. For some, it happens only for a short time—like a few minutes or a few hours—especially if it is triggered by stress or a strong emotion. For others, these feelings can continue for much longer, sometimes lasting days or even weeks. In some cases, depersonalization becomes a more constant part of life, known as depersonalization disorder, where the feeling of being detached or watching oneself from the outside sticks around for a long time. It is important to understand that each person’s experience is unique. Some may see these experiences lessen on their own over time, while others may need help from mental health professionals. Therapy, and sometimes medications, can be helpful in reducing the frequency or severity of these feelings.
