Dysmenorrhea is when you have painful periods, while amenorrhea is when your period stops or doesn’t start at all.
Dysmenorrhea means having cramps or pain during your period. It is usually when your period comes as expected, but you feel a lot of pain in your belly or lower back. This pain can sometimes make it hard to do your normal activities, but it happens each time you have your period. On the other hand, amenorrhea is when you do not have your period at all. There are two types: primary amenorrhea means you never started having periods, and secondary amenorrhea means you used to have periods but then they stopped for several months. Amenorrhea can happen for many reasons, such as if your body’s hormones are not balanced, if you are very stressed, if you exercise too much, or if your weight changes a lot. In summary, dysmenorrhea tells us about pain during a period, and amenorrhea tells us that a period is missing. Knowing the difference is important because each condition may need a different kind of help from your doctor.
