Can a Herniated Disc Cause Low Back Pain?

Absolutely. The classic symptoms of a herniated disc include low back pain that extends down the buttocks and into the legs.

answer background

Explanation

A herniated disc occurs when the discs between the bones in the lower back get squeezed out of place and rub against nerves in the spine. Typical symptoms include low back pain with radiation or extension of that pain into the groin, buttocks or down one or both of the legs. You may also have weakness and numbness in those areas as well. Fortunately, the vast majority of herniated discs resolve with conservative measures like anti-inflammatories, graded return to activity and physical therapy. Some people may end up needing surgery if symptoms are very severe or do not improve after 6-8 weeks.
