How Is an Incomplete Bowel Movement Defined and Diagnosed?

An incomplete bowel movement, also called incomplete evacuation, is described as a lingering feeling that stool has not been completely removed from the bowel. This symptom is often seen with constipation or conditions like dyssynergic defecation, where the muscles in your pelvic area do not work together properly. A doctor will start by asking you about your bowel habits, how often you go, and whether you feel like you are passing all of your stool. They use this history, along with a physical exam, to help understand your condition. If more information is needed, doctors may perform tests to see how your muscles and nerves are working during a bowel movement. One test is anorectal manometry, which measures pressure in your rectum and anal canal. Another is the balloon expulsion test, where you try to push out a small balloon from your rectum to mimic the movement of stool. These tests help rule out other issues and confirm that your sensation of incomplete evacuation is related to how your body is moving stool.
