Feeling like you haven't finished your bowel movement may have different causes, like constipation, muscle issues in the pelvis, or nerve problems.
When you feel like you still have stool in your bowels, several reasons might be behind it. One common cause is constipation. When constipation occurs, stools can become hard and difficult to pass through completely, leaving you with a feeling of incomplete evacuation. Sometimes the muscles in your pelvic floor, which help you push out stool, might not relax properly. This is sometimes called pelvic floor dysfunction, and it makes it hard for the bowel to empty fully. Nerve problems, or what we call neurogenic bowel dysfunction, can also be a reason. These problems can affect the signals that tell your body when you have finished a bowel movement. Additionally, factors like a diet low in fiber, not enough fluids, and not moving around much can make your bowels work slowly, which can add to the feeling that you haven’t completely evacuated. All of these reasons can overlap. It’s important to talk with a healthcare provider if this feeling happens often, so they can help figure out the cause and suggest ways to make your bowel movements more complete.
