Irregular periods mean that the time between periods or the flow may differ from one cycle to the next. This can be a normal part of life or a sign of hormone changes or other health issues.
When someone has irregular periods, it means that their menstrual cycles do not occur on a regular schedule. In a typical cycle, periods usually come every 21 to 35 days, but with irregular cycles, the time between them can vary a lot. Missing a cycle while sexually active should always prompt a pregnancy test. Sometimes the bleeding lasts longer, or it might be very light during one cycle and heavier in another. These changes happen because hormones, which control your menstrual cycle, might be fluctuating. Many factors can cause these hormone changes, such as going through puberty, stress, changes in diet or exercise, or even conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or thyroid issues. For teenagers, some irregularity is normal as the body learns how to manage hormones. However, if the irregular periods continue over time or if they cause other problems, it is a good idea to talk with a healthcare provider. They can check your hormone levels and overall health to see if everything is working as it should be or if any treatment is needed.
