The main cause of overactive bladder is the bladder muscle, called the detrusor, contracting too much when the bladder fills up, which creates an urge to urinate suddenly.
Overactive bladder happens when the muscle in the bladder, known as the detrusor muscle, becomes overactive. Normally, this muscle only tightens when it’s time for you to go to the bathroom. However, in people with overactive bladder, the detrusor muscle may contract too much or too often. This extra activity makes you feel a sudden and urgent need to urinate, even if your bladder isn’t completely full. Researchers have found that this overactivity is the main reason for the symptoms of overactive bladder. It is important to know that while aging can sometimes play a role, having an overactive bladder is not just a normal part of getting older. Other conditions, medications, or problems with the nerves that control the bladder can also contribute to how the muscle behaves. If you experience symptoms like a sudden urge to urinate many times during the day or night, it’s a good idea to talk with a doctor, who can help find the best treatment for you.
