Sharp pain in the rectal area during or after a bowel movement can be caused by an anal fissure or enlarged hemorrhoids.
When you have sharp pain at your bottom during or after a bowel movement, it can be due to small tears (anal fissures) or swollen blood vessels (hemorrhoids). Anal fissures are tiny cuts in the skin that can happen when passing hard or large stools, leading to a sharp, burning pain that may last from a few minutes to several hours afterward. Enlarged hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the rectal area that can become irritated, especially during bowel movements, causing pain and sometimes a bit of bleeding. Other less common issues like minor abscesses or infections might also be a reason for discomfort. Here are a few ways to ease the pain: • Eating fiber-rich foods and drinking plenty of water to soften your stool. • Taking warm baths to soothe the area. • Using over-the-counter creams or medications.
If the pain does not get better or if you notice heavy bleeding, it’s important to see a doctor to find out the exact cause and get the right treatment.
