Sudden, sharp pain under your right rib cage when breathing may be related to muscle strain or inflammation, but it can also be a sign more serious conditions like a blood clot in the lungs.
Sharp pain under the right rib cage could have various causes. Musculoskeletal causes of this type of pain are often caused by strain or injury to the muscles and bones around your rib cage. Common causes include overexertion during exercise, repetitive movements, or trauma to the chest wall. The pain typically worsens with movement or deep breathing but usually improves with rest and over-the-counter pain medications. This type of pain can also be associated with respiratory conditions such as pneumonia, bronchitis, or other lung infections. These conditions often cause inflammation of the lung tissue or the surrounding membranes, leading to sharp pain that worsens with breathing. Other common conditions that can cause this type of pain include pleurisy (inflammation of the lining around the lungs), and even liver and gallbladder problems since they are located in the right upper abdomen. The pain may worsen with deep breathing, coughing, or certain movements. A serious cause of sharp pain under the ribs is a blood clot to the lungs, called a pulmonary embolism. This occurs when a blood clot travels to the lungs and blocks blood flow, causing intense pain, shortness of breath, and potentially life-threatening complications if not treated promptly. Given that minor muscle strains and more serious medical conditions can all cause pain under the rib cage while breathing, it is best to discuss your symptoms with a healthcare provider.
