A perianal abscess is an infection near the anus that causes pain, redness, and swelling, and it is treated by draining the pus and sometimes using antibiotics.
A perianal abscess is a painful, swollen lump that forms near the opening of your anus when an infection causes a collection of pus. The most common symptoms include pain when sitting or during bowel movements, redness and warmth in the area, and sometimes fever. You might feel a throbbing or aching sensation near your anus, which can make it hard to sit or walk comfortably. To treat this condition, healthcare providers usually perform a simple procedure called incision and drainage (I&D). In this procedure, a small cut is made to open the abscess and allow the pus to drain out, which often relieves pain and begins the healing process. In some cases, if the infection is more severe or spreads, antibiotics may be prescribed to help clear the infection. After treatment, keeping the area clean, taking warm sitz baths, and following your provider’s instructions will help ensure that you heal properly.
