A discharge that smells like urine can be caused by urine mixing with your natural vaginal secretions or due to changes in the bacteria, such as in bacterial vaginosis.
Your body naturally produces vaginal discharge to help clean and protect your vagina. Sometimes, this discharge might have a smell that reminds you of urine. One common reason is that urine can mix with the vaginal secretions, e.g. from some residual urine after urination. This can happen during wiping or even during everyday movements. Another possibility is that an imbalance in the natural bacteria, such as in bacterial vaginosis, is changing the chemicals in your vaginal discharge. In this condition, the healthy bacteria (lactobacilli) decrease and other bacteria take over, which can create chemical substances that give off an odor similar to urine. While a slight urine-like smell can sometimes be normal, especially if it's related to a little urine contamination, any strong, unusual smell that persists or comes with other symptoms like irritation, itching, or burning should be checked by a healthcare provider. They can help determine if the change is due to normal factors or if it needs treatment to maintain good vaginal health.
