Your poop might smell like gasoline because your gut is making unusual chemicals from bacteria or problems in digestion.
Your digestive system breaks down food with the help of bacterial called microbes. These bacteria produce chemicals that give your stool its normal smell. Sometimes, when food is not properly digested, due to infections or other underlying medical issues, the bacteria may produce different chemicals. Some of these chemicals are called volatile organic compounds, and they can give your poop a strong, gasoline-like odor. Changes in diet or an imbalance in gut bacteria can also lead to these unusual smells. This smell is a clue that your digestion has been altered in some way. This may be temporary. If you notice this smell along with other symptoms like stomach pain, diarrhea, or weight loss, it is a good idea to talk to a healthcare provider who can counsel on next steps.
