What is clavus?

Clavus, more commonly known as a corn, is a condition where skin thickens and hardens over a specific area, often the foot, due to chronic pressure.

Symptoms of clavus

  • Area of skin that is rough and hard

  • Skin hardening

  • Lumps under the skin

  • Skin problem on the feet, beyond the ankle

Questions your doctor may ask to check for clavus

  • Do you have dry or rough skin?

  • Do you have skin hardening?

  • Do you have any lumps under your skin?

  • Do your foot problems affect the skin beyond the ankle?

Treatment for clavus

Corn plasters or a simple procedure can remove the hard center. However, lifestyle changes like switching to well-fitting shoes are needed to prevent corns from returning.
