What is Diabetic Macular Edema (DME)?

Diabetic macular edema occurs when tiny bulges (microaneurysms) protrude from the vessel walls, leaking fluid and blood into the retina. This fluid can cause swelling (edema) in the central part of the retina (macula) and may lead to vision problems or blindness.

Typical Symptoms of Diabetic Macular Edema (DME)

Diagnostic Questions for Diabetic Macular Edema (DME)

Your doctor may ask these questions to check for this disease:

  • Have you been diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy?
  • Have you ever been treated for diabetes?
  • Do you have color blindness or recent change in color perception?
  • Is it hard for you to distinguish subtle differences in color intensity or brightness?
  • Do things appear darker or dimmer to you than before?

Treatment of Diabetic Macular Edema (DME)

Treatment options depend on the severity of vision loss and include anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapy, anti-inflammatory treatment, and laser therapy. In advanced cases of diabetic macular edema, surgery may be considered.
