A head injury is any trauma, or damage, to your brain, skull or scalp, which may be open or closed. These can range from a mild bruise to a severe traumatic brain injury. Common head injuries include scalp wounds, concussions and skull fractures.

The treatment and prognosis of head injuries depends on the type and severity of the head injury. In minor head injuries, your doctor will recommend avoiding additional trauma and may prescribe medications to help with the pain. In severe cases, your doctor might recommend hospitalisation, IV medication and possibly surgery.
