What is shoulder periarthritis?

Also known as "frozen shoulder". This condition is caused by inflammation of the ligaments and tendons (cartilage) around the shoulder joint. As the disease progresses, patients find it increasingly difficult to move the shoulder joint. Risk factors include diabetes, advanced age, and injury to the joint.

Symptoms of shoulder periarthritis

  • Moving the arm / shoulder worsens the pain

  • Pain in the upper arms (from shoulder down to elbow)

  • Pain when exerting physically e.g. climbing the stairs

  • Pain changes with posture

  • Shoulder pain

  • Joint pain

  • Shoulder pain worsens on changing clothes

  • Shoulder ache worse on raising arms

Treatment for shoulder periarthritis

Frozen shoulder usually takes 6-18 months for full recovery. Painkillers are useful, and gentle stretching and physiotherapy can help maintain shoulder flexibility and strength. Good control of blood sugar levels can help too, if the condition is caused by diabetes.
