An abdominal bulge after a DIEP flap procedure may happen due to weakened abdominal muscles, a separation of the muscle (rectus diastasis), or a small hernia. It’s important to talk with your doctor if you notice such a bulge.
After a DIEP flap breast reconstruction, tissue is taken from your lower belly to create the new breast. This surgery can sometimes weaken the muscles or change how they work. One common reason for an abdominal bulge is that the muscles in your belly may not be as strong after surgery. This can lead to a condition called rectus diastasis, where the muscles separate slightly, allowing a bulge to form. Another possibility is that a small hernia may develop, where a part of the internal tissue pushes out through a weakened spot in the muscle. These changes can make a bulge appear, especially when you stand, cough, or are active. Although this bulge might not always be dangerous, it can be uncomfortable and may need treatment if it causes pain or keeps growing. Your doctor may use physical exams or imaging tests like an ultrasound or CT scan to check the bulge. Depending on the findings, treatments can range from physical therapy and supportive garments to surgical repair if needed. Always share any new or worsening symptoms with your healthcare provider for proper care.
