Suppressing emotions usually does not cause overall memory loss but can make some specific memories harder to recall or less detailed.
When we try to push away or hide our emotions, it can change how we remember certain events. Studies show that trying hard not to think about upsetting memories might reduce their unintended influence, which means those memories might not come to mind as easily later. For example, when someone intentionally avoids thinking about a distressing event, they might later have less clear or accurate details about that event. This is because the process of controlling our thoughts can sometimes stress the memory's strength. On the other hand, this kind of memory change does not mean that all memories or overall memory abilities are damaged. Rather, the specific memories tied to strong emotions might be less accessible or slightly distorted. It is important to understand that using suppression as a way to deal with emotions is just one piece of what shapes our memories and emotions. Different people may experience these effects in different ways, and it is not the same as having a widespread memory loss condition. If you or someone you know is struggling with strong emotions or memories, it is a good idea to talk with someone who can offer support.
