Why Do I Experience Chest Pain While Sleeping on My Left Side?

Lying on your left side may change the way your heart, lungs, and stomach are positioned, sometimes causing chest pain due to pressure, reflux, or other noncardiac issues.

answer background

Explanation

When you sleep on your left side, your body’s position can affect how your chest feels. One possibility is that the pressure from your weight on that side might press slightly on your heart or the tissues near it. For some people, this added pressure can trigger discomfort even if it’s not a serious heart condition. Another reason could be acid reflux. When you sleep on your left side, stomach acid may travel up into the esophagus (the tube that connects your mouth to your stomach), causing irritation and chest pain. In addition, musculoskeletal issues such as inflammation of the cartilage in your chest (costochondritis) could be affected by this sleeping position. Most cases of chest pain while lying on your left side are due to these noncardiac factors, but it is important to tell your doctor about any persistent or worsening pain so they can rule out other causes and help guide appropriate treatment.
