Chest pain that comes on suddenly, is very severe, or is accompanied by other symptoms like sweating, nausea, shortness of breath, dizziness or pain that spreads to your arm, back or jaw should prompt immediate medical attention.
Some types of chest pain can be a sign of a heart attack or a severe heart problem. For example, if you feel sudden, intense chest pressure or pain that lasts more than a few minutes, this might be due to an acute myocardial infarction (a heart attack). Pain that happens with other symptoms like difficulty breathing, nausea, dizziness, sweating, or pain that radiates to your arm, back or jaw is very concerning. These could be signs of a heart attack, which means the heart isn’t getting enough blood. Such pain is not normal and needs emergent help. Additionally, if your chest pain is worsening or you feel very unwell, it is important to get to a hospital or call for emergency help right away. Always take chest pain seriously—err on the side of caution and seek medical care immediately if you think something is wrong.
