Many men with erectile dysfunction can still have erections, and testosterone therapy may help those with low testosterone by improving sexual desire and the physical mechanisms needed for an erection.
Erectile dysfunction (ED) means having trouble getting or keeping an erection. Even if you have ED, it is still possible to achieve an erection at times, though it might not always be as strong or long-lasting as you would like. Testosterone is a hormone that helps control many body functions, including sexual desire and the ability to have an erection. When a man has low testosterone—a condition sometimes called hypogonadism—he might have fewer spontaneous erections and a lower interest in sex. Testosterone therapy works by raising the testosterone levels closer to normal. Studies have shown that when testosterone levels improve, some men experience better libido (sexual desire) and improved erections, especially those that occur during sleep or in response to sexual thoughts or stimulation. This therapy helps the body work the way it naturally should by influencing the tissues and blood flow that contribute to getting an erection. However, it is important to know that every person is different, and testosterone therapy mainly benefits those whose ED is linked to low testosterone levels.
