Pain under your fingernail can happen from small injuries, infections, or pressure on the nail. A doctor’s checkup is advised if the pain does not go away.
There are several reasons why you might feel pain under your fingernail.
One cause is a subungual hematoma. This occurs when you have a tiny injury, like a small bump or trauma, which leads to blood collecting under the nail. Sometimes you might not even remember the injury.
Infections are another possibility. When germs get into or around the nail, they can cause an infection that makes the nail area painful. This type of infection is sometimes called a paronychia. The pain might also be related to repeated pressure or irritation, which can happen if your nail is frequently bumped into or pressed against something. Some other causes include germs transmitted from objects and ingrown nails.
Although these explanations can help us understand nail pain, only a healthcare professional can properly check the nail area, determine what the problem might be, and suggest an appropriate treatment if needed.
