About the symptom

It describes any painful sensation over the nail, which may be pressing,sharp, burning or dull.

  • Fever

  • Repeated fever above 38 ℃

  • Swelling of the affected area

Possible causes

  • Paronychia

    Inflammation of the skin around the nails. It is commonly caused by bacterial or fungal infections, which enter through broken skin (e.g. from hangnails or nail-biting).

  • Hand-foot-mouth disease

    HFMD (Hand-foot-mouth disease) is a highly contagious viral infection. To prevent transmission, patients should wash their hands regularly and avoid going to school until the ulcers have healed and the rashes have dried up. Patients often eat and drink less due to the painful mouth ulcers, hence it is important to monitor for dehydration and encourage food and water intake.

  • Psoriasis (except for pustular psoriasis)

    A skin disease caused by the immune system attacking skin cells, thought to be genetic as well as triggered by other things such as environment, illnesses and stress.

  • Tuberous sclerosis
  • Complex regional pain syndrome
  • Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA)
  • Mycosis fungoides / Sézary syndrome
  • Scleroderma
  • Iron deficiency anemia
