Incomplete bowel emptying can happen when the muscles used to push out stool do not work well, when the colon moves stools through too slowly, or when behaviors like poor toilet habits or low fiber intake make it harder to fully empty the bowels.
There are several reasons why your bowel may not empty completely. One main factor is dyssynergic defecation, which means that the muscles in your pelvic floor and the anal sphincter (the muscles at the end of your digestive tract) do not work well together when you try to defecate. This lack of coordination makes it harder for stools to pass through. Another reason is slow colonic motility, where the colon moves stools through too slowly. When stools move slowly, it can build up and become harder to pass through. Additionally, behaviors can play a role. For example, if a person does not follow a regular toileting routine, has a diet low in fiber, or does not drink enough water, it can make stools harder and bulkier, making it difficult to fully empty the bowel. Other factors like decreased physical activity or the side effects of some medications can also contribute to this issue. All these factors can add up to cause a feeling of incomplete bowel emptying.
