Feeling like a bowel movement is incomplete is often caused by constipation and problems with the muscles used during bowel movements. Other reasons can include irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), which can make your bowel habits irregular.
When you feel like you haven’t completed a bowel movement, constipation is usually a main factor. Constipation makes your stools hard and dry, so it does not travel easily through your colon. This slow movement means some stool may remain, leading to an uneasy feeling afterward. The muscles in your pelvic area help push the stool out, and if these muscles do not work properly—a condition called pelvic floor dysfunction—it can be hard to fully empty your bowels. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is another common cause. IBS can cause mixed symptoms like constipation and diarrhea, and people with IBS often feel like they have not completely finished their bowel movement. Other common contributors include eating too few fibrous foods, not drinking enough fluids, or even stress. All these factors can affect how well your intestines move things along, leaving you with that uncomfortable feeling of incomplete evacuation.
