If you have an infected cuticle, start by taking steps at home to clean and care for the area, but if it worsens, see a doctor.
When your cuticle becomes infected—a common condition known as paronychia—the first step is to keep the area clean. Gently wash your hands with soap and warm water to remove any germs, and then dry the area carefully. Soaking your affected finger in warm water with a little salt can help reduce swelling and bring relief; try doing this for 10 to 15 minutes a few times a day. After soaking, carefully apply an antiseptic or over-the-counter antibiotic cream to the infected area. Cover the cuticle with a clean bandage to protect it from further irritation. Avoid irritating the area by not biting or picking at the cuticle, and consider wearing loose gloves if you’re doing chores that might expose your hand to dirt or chemicals. Watch for signs that the infection might be getting worse. If you experience increased redness, swelling, warmth, or pus, or if the pain intensifies, it’s important to seek medical help immediately. A doctor can evaluate your condition and may prescribe oral antibiotics or perform a minor procedure if necessary to clean or drain the infection.
