Itchy feeling around the urethral opening in females can be caused by infections, allergies, or irritation from chemicals, among other reasons.
Many things may cause an itchy entrance to the urethra in females. Sometimes an infection like urethritis, which happens when bacteria or other germs get into the urethra, may lead to irritation and itchiness. Yeast infections, which usually make the skin and nearby areas red and itchy, can also extend to the area around the urethra. Other times, harsh soaps, bubble baths, or even laundry detergents can irritate the sensitive skin around the urethral opening, causing itchiness. When the itch is part of a larger condition, like vulvar pruritus (persistent itch on the external female genital area), multiple factors may be involved. These can include allergies, contact dermatitis, or even skin conditions that are not infections. Each of these causes creates inflammation or a reaction that makes the area feel uncomfortable. It is always good to talk with a healthcare provider if the itch lasts, becomes worse, or is accompanied by other symptoms so the cause can be found and treated properly.
