Itchy urethra in males is often caused by infections, especially urethral bacterial infections, but it can also result from chemical irritants or physical injuries that lead to itching.
In many cases, an itchy urethra in males is related to an infection known as urethritis. Gonococcal urethritis, caused by N. Gonorrohea is a very common cause. Nongonococcal urethritis is also common type that is not caused by the bacteria responsible for gonorrhea. Instead, bacteria such as Chlamydia trachomatis and Mycoplasma genitalium are frequent culprits. These bacteria can lead to inflammation and cause symptoms like itching and discomfort. Apart from infections, noninfectious causes can also lead to an itchy sensation. For example, exposure to harsh soaps, lotions, or chemicals used in personal care products can irritate the sensitive lining of the urethra. Physical injuries, which may occur from vigorous activity or instrument use, can also cause irritation. Sometimes, even without a clear infection or noticeable irritant, some men experience what is called idiopathic urethritis where changes in the natural bacterial community (microbiota) may play a role. It is important to recognize these possibilities so that proper evaluation and management can be considered if the irritation persists.
