Kneecap pain from pressure can be caused by patellar tendinitis, patellofemoral pain syndrome (also called runner’s knee), patellar malalignment (when the kneecap does not move correctly), or chondromalacia patella (when the cartilage under the kneecap weakens)
When you press on your kneecap and feel pain, it could be due to a few common conditions. One is patellar tendinitis, which is due to an inflammation of the tendons at the knee cap. Another is patellofemoral pain syndrome, where the area around the kneecap hurts because the bones and soft tissue in the joint are not moving smoothly. This is often seen in people who run or play sports. Another possible cause is patellar malalignment. This means the kneecap is not lined up properly with the rest of the knee, which can create extra pressure and pain when you touch it. Another condition called chondromalacia patella happens when the protective cartilage under the kneecap becomes soft and breaks down. Without a smooth cartilage cover, even light pressure on the kneecap can hurt. All these issues can cause knee pain and are common among active people. It is a good idea to get your knee checked by a doctor if the pain continues or gets worse.
