Paresthesia, or the pins and needles feeling, is usually not dangerous on its own, but if you notice sudden, severe, or additional alarming symptoms, it might need urgent medical care.
Paresthesia is that tingling or numbness sensation many people feel sometimes when a part of the body "falls asleep." In many cases, it is temporary and not harmful, such as after leaning on your arm too long or even after some dental procedures. However, if the pins and needles are sudden, very strong, or come with additional concerns like severe pain, swelling, changes in skin color, or muscle weakness, it could be a sign of something more serious. One sided paresthesia may be a sign of a stroke. Conditions like acute compartment syndrome or acute limb ischemia are emergencies that might include paresthesia as one of their symptoms. These conditions require immediate treatment to prevent lasting damage. If your paresthesia is new, widespread, or accompanied by other symptoms that worry you, it is a good idea to seek medical help immediately. Always remember that while many cases of paresthesia resolve on their own, listening to your body and getting evaluated by a healthcare provider is important if your symptoms persist or worsen.
