Left lower abdominal pain can be caused by conditions affecting the colon or nearby organs, such as diverticulitis or epiploic appendagitis.
Pain in the left lower part of your abdomen may come from a few different reasons. One common cause is colonic diverticulitis. This happens when small pouches that form in the wall of your colon become inflamed or infected, leading to pain and sometimes fever or changes in bowel habits. Another possibility is primary epiploic appendagitis, which is inflammation of tiny, fat-filled sacs that hang off the colon. This condition often causes sudden sharp pain but usually resolves on its own after a few days. In women, pain in this area could also come from problems related to the ovaries or uterus. Sometimes, a careful ultrasound is used to help doctors tell these conditions apart. Other less common causes may include hernias or muscle strain. If you experience ongoing pain in the left lower abdomen, it is a good idea to see a healthcare provider. They will ask about your symptoms, perform an exam, and might order imaging tests to determine the exact cause and guide the best treatment plan.
