RSV is especially serious for infants and older adults because their immune systems are either not fully developed or weakened, making it harder for them to fight off the virus.
Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) can be particularly dangerous for infants and older adults due to differences in their immune systems.
Infants: Babies, especially those under six months old, have immature immune systems that are not fully equipped to combat infections like RSV. Their small airways can also become easily blocked by the inflammation caused by the virus, leading to breathing difficulties.
Older Adults: As people age, their immune systems naturally weaken, which means they are less able to fight off infections. Seniors with other health conditions, like heart or lung diseases, are at even greater risk of severe illness from RSV.
In both groups, RSV can lead to serious respiratory problems, such as pneumonia or bronchiolitis. This makes it important to take preventive measures, such as good hygiene practices and, when available, vaccination, to protect these vulnerable populations.
