Sharp chest pain can have many causes, ranging from chest wall issues like costochondritis and pleuritic pain from lung inflammation to more serious conditions like an acute aortic dissection.
Sharp chest pain means you feel a quick, intense pain in your chest that can come and go. One common cause is costochondritis, which is when the cartilage connecting your ribs to your breastbone becomes inflamed. This kind of pain is often felt when you press on your chest or move in certain ways. Another reason can be pleuritic chest pain, which occurs when the lining around your lungs gets irritated or inflamed; this pain usually gets worse when you take a deep breath or cough. Although less common, a very serious cause of sharp chest pain is an acute aortic dissection, where there is a tear in the wall of the aorta, the main blood vessel in your body. This condition is a medical emergency and usually comes with very severe pain and other symptoms. Other causes might include muscle strain or lung issues like pneumonia or pulmonary embolism. Because sharp chest pain can be a sign of something serious, it is important to seek medical help if the pain is sudden, severe, or comes with other concerning signs.
