A stomach ache with diarrhea is commonly caused by a stomach bug (gastroenteritis) or another digestive issue.
When you have a stomach ache and diarrhea, it is likely caused by an infection or inflammation somewhere in the digestive tract. One common reason is gastroenteritis, which occurs when a virus, bacteria, or sometimes a parasite infects the stomach and intestines. Viruses like norovirus are often responsible and spread very easily, especially in crowded places. Bacteria such as Salmonella or E. coli can also lead to food poisoning when they contaminate food or water, causing inflammation and pain in your stomach along with vomiting and/or diarrhea. Less common causes of abdominal pain and diarrhea include irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), or celiac disease. These conditions are typically chronic and may require medical diagnosis and specific treatment plans. Certain medications, stress, or anxiety can also trigger stomach pain and diarrhea in some people. If your symptoms are severe, if you see blood in your stool, or if you can't keep fluids down, it is a good idea to talk to your healthcare provider for a more comprehensive evaluation.
