Tight chest muscles can pull your shoulders forward, leading to a rounded-shoulder posture.
When your chest muscles, especially the pectorals, become tight, they can pull your shoulders toward the front. This forward pull causes your shoulders to round, and over time, it can change the natural curve of your upper back. Rounded shoulders often go along with an increased curve in the upper back (thoracic kyphosis), which also puts stress on the muscles and joints. This change in posture can make your chest muscles even tighter and further worsen the rounded appearance. In other words, tight chest muscles and rounded shoulders work together in a cycle where one makes the other worse. Improving this situation often involves stretching the tight chest muscles and strengthening the muscles in your upper back and shoulders to help pull everything back into better alignment. Exercises, manual treatments, and good posture practices can help break this cycle and make you feel more comfortable. Working with a physical therapist or other healthcare provider can guide you in doing exercises that are tailored for improving your posture and reducing tightness in your chest muscles.
